Taken from the Japanese SEGA Saturn Magazine #67, the AM1 team share their development stories on the original House of the Dead arcade game while the Saturn version was in development. NiktheGreek, Retro Gamer Writer & Sonic Retro forum member, has posted an interesting discovery while interviewing one of the artists behind the SEGA Saturn port of The House of the Dead. In the interview, the artist describes his experience working on the conversion of the game with a backup drive with all of the game’s assets. Within the backup drive, textures of Judge Dredd’s badge and Sylvester Stallone has been found along with two unused enemies with sexual gimp like designs. This contest requires great artistic skills and talent. However, this is a special type of fan art contest. We want our artists to draw their favorite SEGA character into a mutant/creatures as seen in the House of the Dead universe (We don’t use the Z word, friends.)

One of our forum members, TheDeath, posted his entire House of the Dead Collection within the forums. I must say that this is the greatest collection I have ever seen in my entire life. He even has some rare HOTD merchandises from different countries. One of them happens to be a House of the Dead manga (which is one of the items I’ve been searching for the past year now). Check out his amazing collection.

The House of the Dead is a light gun shooter developed by Sega AM1 for the Model 2 arcade hardware. The game is similar to one of Sega’s other titles such as Virtua Cop where players must shoot the enemy target and save as many innocent people as you can. However, the enemies are not human, their the undead created by a mad scientist who wishes to eliminate the human race. As an agent, you must stop him, gun down his evil creatures, and save as many scientist held hostage as you can, including the main protagonist’s girlfriend, Sophie. The game also has a unique branching system where you can choose a path around the mansion depending on your choice. Remember not to go into the house… alone. Continue reading
